Tribhuvan University (TU) is a public university in Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal. Established in 1959, TU is the oldest of the five universities in Nepal. Enrolment in 2013-2014 was eighth largest in the world.
The university provides undergraduate and graduate education. The university has 85 integral colleges and more than 600 affiliated colleges throughout the country. Since it is government financed, it is less expensive than private universities.

History

Tribhuvan University was named after late King Tribhuvan. Established in 1959, i.e. 2016 B.S., it is the oldest and largest university in Nepal.

Academics

TU marked its golden jubilee in the year 2009 organizing various programmes. In the 52nd year of its establishment, the university family remains committed and dedicated to making it a source and centre of quality education to set up a culture of learning in the country and to promote the notion of national and global peace and harmony.
Since its inception, the state owned university, has, expanded its programmes in different disciplines. There are five technical institutes and four general faculties. The university offers 115 courses for the technical proficiency certificate level. TU offers 1079 courses at Bachelors level and 1000 courses at Master’s level. It offers Ph.D. degree in different disciplines both at the Technical Institutes and Faculties.
TU ran its programmes only through its constituent campuses prior to 1980.With the increasing number of students willing to acquire higher education; it was not possible for the university to accommodate all the students in the constituent campuses. This situation led to the establishment of colleges in the private sector because the constituent campuses of the university alone could not meet the demand of the nation. From 1979–80, TU started providing affiliation to private colleges to conduct various programmes at different levels. Eight hundred twenty six private colleges spread all over the country have so far received TU affiliations.
In the current academic session (2014-2015) altogether 4,05,341 students have been enrolled at various levels of TU academic Programmes. 1,48,141 (36.55%) students study in its 60 constituent campuses including 38 central departments, while 2,57,200 (63.45%) students study in 1053 affiliated colleges. It clearly reveals that affiliated colleges do have more students than the constituent campuses.
TU has 7841 teaching faculty and 7413 non-teaching staff including the support staff in its constituent campuses. The number of total employees is 15254.

IIM Ahmedabad

IIM Ahmedabad's mission is to help India and other developing countries improve their managerial practices.
In just four decades IIM Ahmedabad has evolved from being India’s premier management institute to a notable international school of management. It all started with Dr Vikram Sarabhai and a few other public spirited industrialists realizing that agriculture, education, health, transportation, population control, energy and public administration were all vital elements in a growing society and that it was necessary to link these meaningfully with industry. The result was the creation of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1961 as an autonomous body with the active collaboration of the Government of India, Government of Gujarat and industry. From the very start the founders introduced the concept of faculty governance: all members of the faculty play an important role in administering the diverse academic and non-academic activities of the Institute. The empowerment of the faculty has been the propelling force behind the high quality of learning experience at IIM Ahmedabad. The Institute had initial collaboration with Harvard Business School. This collaboration greatly influenced the Institute’s approach to education. Gradually it emerged as a confluence of the best of Eastern and Western values.  iim_ahmedabad1IIMA's mission is to help India and other developing countries improve their managerial practices both in the private and in the public sectors and adopt superior public policies. It seeks to do this through producing risk-taking leader-managers who will pioneer new managerial practices and set new standards; through producing teachers and researchers who will generate new ideas of International significance and through purposeful consulting aimed at helping client organizations scale new heights. Research is at the core of IIM Ahmedabad and provides a major interface with the wider academic and business world. It provides new theoretical frameworks that enable reassessment and refinement of current practices and thinking. Groundbreaking interdisciplinary research by the faculty feeds directly into an enhanced learning environment at the Institute and indirectly to a wider audience of practicing managers and teachers of management. The reputation of IIM Ahmedabad owes much to the exceptional caliber of its faculty. The Institute prides itself on creating an environment of substantial academic freedom overlaid by rigorous, self-imposed standards of excellence and socially responsive practices. The faculty willingly submit themselves to a unique, rigorous, open and continuous process of appraisal and feedback from the students. This enables the faculty to fine tune course contents and delivery mechanisms. Through a variety of committees, faculty plays a hands-on role in the governance of the Institute and assumes total ownership of collective decisions. The Institute’s library is an invaluable resource with close to 180,000 volumes, 600 current periodicals, 700 CDs and more than 2000 working papers and dissertations. It also provides indexing search services from a number of major databases like ABI/Inform, Econlit and BSP. The library has set up the 3i network or “Information Infrastructure for Institutions” to provide business, industry, environmental, agricultural and economic information to the users.

An international flavour is added by students from various countries who come here every year as part of an exchange programme. Two types of housing are available on campus: dormitories and family housing. Dormitories on campus provide single rooms for single students. Limited housing is available on campus for students with family. Permission to stay outside the campus may be granted only in exceptional circumstances. University of Vaasa

The University of Vaasa (Finnish: Vaasan yliopisto, Swedish: Vasa universitet) is a multidisciplinary, business-oriented university in Vaasa, Finland. The campus of the university is situated by the Gulf of Bothnia adjacent to downtown Vaasa. The university has evolved from a school of economics founded in 1968 to a university consisting of three faculties: Faculty of Business Studies, Faculty of Philosophy and Faculty of Technology. With its Faculty of Business Studies, also called the Vaasa School of Economics, University of Vaasa is one of the largest business universities in Finland. The university has 425 personnel which includes a teaching staff of 180 and 54 professors. Around 5000 students are currently studying in various degree programs at the university.

History

In 1966 the Council of State made the decision to establish a School of Economics and Business Administration in Vaasa, and so Vaasa got its first institution of higher education which the region of Vaasa had worked for since the 1940s. The very next year the first students started their studies; 90 business and 60 correspondence students. The first principal to be chosen for the school was Tryggve Saxén and the first vice principal was Mauri Palomäki, who later would become the longest serving principal the school has seen so far. The lectures were first held in a yard building of Vaasa Commercial College in Raastuvankatu street, but in its second year the school moved into the whole house as the commercial college moved to a new building.
In 1977 the school became a state institution along with all other academic institutions in Finland.
In 1980 education in Humanities (languages) began and so the school became a "School of higher education" (in Finland the term is "Korkeakoulu". In order to be called a University, or "Yliopisto", in Finland at least four faculties are needed). In 1983 studies in the Social Sciences began and in 1990 Technology studies began in connection with Helsinki University of Technology. In 1992 the school was organised into four faculties; The Humanities, Business Administration, Accounting and Industrial Management, and Social Sciences, so that it could finally officially be labelled a University. In 1994 the school moved into its new premises on Palosaari.

Faculties

There are three faculties at the University of Vaasa:
Faculty of Business Studies
Faculty of Philosophy
Faculty of Technology

Middlesex University

Middlesex University is a university in Hendon, north west London, England. It is located within the historic county boundaries of Middlesex from which it takes its name. It is one of the new universities and is a member of the Million+ working group. As is the case with many former polytechnics, Middlesex can trace its history back to the 19th century, yet was not formally organised as a teaching institution until 1973.
Since 2000, the university has been reducing the number of campuses dotted around London's North Circular Road in an effort to cut costs and provide a better student experience by consolidating most of the university at the flagship campus in Hendon. As of the 2013 academic year, its estate strategy which has cost £150 million has now concentrated the university on one site in north London.
In 2012, the university re-structured its academic schools to align them more closely with the needs of industry. Courses at Middlesex are now delivered by the schools of Business, Law, Art and Design, Health and Education, Media and Performing Arts and Science and Technology, alongside the university's Institute for Work Based Learning.

History

The university grew out of merger between different schools and colleges in North London. The oldest and perhaps the most prominent was the Hornsey College of Art, founded in 1882. Other institutions included Ponders End Technical Institute (founded in 1901) and Hendon Technical Institute (founded in 1939). All three were amalgamated to form Middlesex Polytechnic in January 1973.
Before becoming a university in 1992, Middlesex expanded further by adding three more colleges in north London. While continuing to grow through mergers in the 1990s, the university had also begun developing its international presence, by opening regional offices in continental Europe. As of July 2011, it has been operating 21 such offices worldwide.
Since 2000, the university launched a major restructuring programme, which, specifically, translated into a total image rebrand in 2003, the closure of a number of campuses over 2005–2012, the expansion of other campuses and generally the consolidation of the university's activities on fewer, bigger campuses in north London.

Brunel University London

Brunel University London (informally Brunel) is a public research university located in Uxbridge, London, United Kingdom. Founded in 1966, it was named after the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Brunel's campus is located on the outskirts of Uxbridge. It is organised into three colleges and three major research institutes, a structure adopted in August 2014 which also changed the university's name to Brunel University London. Brunel has around 15,200 full-time students and 2,500 staff and had a total income of £178.5 million in 2010/11, of which £14.8 million came from research grants and contracts.
In 1957 Brunel College of Technology separated from Acton Technical College with a focus on the education of engineers. Brunel College of Technology was awarded the status of College of Advanced Technology in 1960 and became Brunel College of Advanced Technology in 1962. In June 1966 Brunel College of Advanced Technology was awarded a Royal Charter and became Brunel University London. It is sometimes described as a British "plate glass university".
Brunel is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association and Universities UK.

History

Origins

Brunel is one of a number of British universities which were established in the 1960s following the Robbins Report on higher education. It is sometimes described as a "plate glass university". The university's origins lie in Acton Technical College, which was split into two in 1957 – Acton Technical College continued to cater for technicians and craftsmen, and the new Brunel College of Technology (named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the British engineer) was dedicated to the education of chartered engineers.
The campus buildings were designed in the Brutalist style of architecture by Richard Sheppard, Robson & Partners, Architects.
In 1960 Brunel College of Technology was awarded the status of College of Advanced Technology, and it was decided that it should expand at another site in order to accommodate the extra buildings that would be needed. Uxbridge was chosen to house the new buildings, and work hadn’t even started before the Ministry of Education officially changed the College’s status: it was officially named Brunel College of Advanced Technology in 1962 – the tenth Advanced Technology College in the country, and the last to be awarded this title.
The Uxbridge (Vine Street) railway branch line was closed in 1964, and the college purchased the land adjacent to its site where the railway had run for £65,000 from the local council.

1966 to present

The Royal Charter granting university status was awarded on 9 June 1966. The university continued to use both campuses until 1971 when it left the Acton site.
In 1980 the university merged with Shoreditch College of Education, located at Cooper's Hill, Runnymede. This became Brunel's second campus. In 1995 the university expanded again, integrating the West London Institute of Higher Education, and adding campuses in Osterley and Twickenham. This increased the number of courses that Brunel University was able to offer. Traditionally the university's strengths were in engineering, science, technology and social sciences but with the addition of the West London Institute, new departments such as arts, humanities, geography & earth science, health and sports science were added, and the size of the student body increased to over 12,000.
Brunel has been the subject of controversy as its approach to higher education has been both market-driven and politically conservative. The decision to award an honorary degree to Margaret Thatcher in 1996, following the University of Oxford's refusal to do so, provoked an outcry by staff and students, and as a result the ceremony had to be held in the House of Lords instead of on campus. In the late 1990s, the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, and Materials Engineering were all closed, and, in 2004, the then Vice-Chancellor Steven Schwartz, initiated the reorganisation of the university's faculties and departments into schools, and closed the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences. The succeeding Vice-Chancellor, the sociologist Christopher Jenks, took office in 2006.[4] and he was followed by Professor Julia Buckingham, previously at Imperial College London, who took up the position of Vice Chancellor at Brunel in October 2012.
In June 2011, Brunel University London licensed Creative Barcode, an automated idea sharing platform which protects ownership of early stage ideas.

Campus

In the late 1990s Brunel devised a 10-year, £250 million Masterplan for the campus. This involved selling off campus sites at Runnymede, Osterley and Twickenham and using the revenue from the sales to renovate and update the buildings and facilities on the Uxbridge campus. Works carried out included a library extension, a state-of-the-art sports complex, renovated students' union facilities, a new Health Sciences teaching centre, and the construction of more halls of residence.
The Brunel campus (especially those buildings in the 1960s 'Brutalist' architectural style) has appeared in several films, most famously in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, large parts of which were filmed on campus. It has also featured in several UK television series including Spooks, Silent Witness,The Sweeney and Inspector Morse.

Organisation and administration

Brunel exists by virtue of a royal charter first granted in 1966 and it has the status of an exempt charity as defined by the Charities Act 2006.
The governing body of Brunel is the Council, which comprises university staff and students and independent members. The Council appoints the Vice-Chancellor and other senior officers. The Council has a number of Committees which support its work.
Brunel's academic governing body is the Senate, which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor. The Senate has a number of Committees which support its work.

Colleges and departments

Brunel has three constituent Academic Colleges:
College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences;
College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences
College of Health and Life Sciences
In 2013 the Business School won the Times Higher Education Awards Business School of the Year.

Finances

In the financial year ended 31 July 2011, Brunel had a total income (including share of joint ventures) of £178.5 million (2009/10 – £169.47 million) and total expenditure of £172.36 million (2009/10 – £163.79 million).[1] Key sources of income included £69.83 million from tuition fees and education contracts (2009/10 – £64.51 million), £55.92 million from funding body grants (2009/10 – £57.55 million), £14.81 million from research grants and contracts (2009/10 – £12.57 million), £0.65 million from endowment and investment income (2009/10 – £0.6 million) and £37.29 million from other income (2009/10 – £34.25 million). During the 2010/11 financial year Brunel had a capital expenditure of £18.8 million (2009/10 – £6.63 million).
At year end Brunel had endowment assets of £2.01 million (2009/10 – £1.59 million), reserves of £140.31 million (2009/10 – £130.83 million) and total net assets of £177.46 million (2009/10 – £170.2 million).

Coat of arms

The Brunel Coat of Arms was granted to the University in 1966 and incorporates various images representative of the University's heritage and principles. For example, the masonry arch symbolises Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the compass and cogwheel symbolise technology, the ermine lozenge is an allusion to the Arms of Lord Halsbury, the first Chancellor of the University and the crest of the swan symbolises Uxbridge.

Nepal Engineering College was established in 1994 as a non profit institution under private sector initiative. The foundation of nec was laid by few visionary Nepalese professionals and academicians who realized the need of an institution serving the technical education needs of the country for accelerated economic growth, reaching to wider section of Nepalese students and making the quality technical education accessible and affordable to the masses. This pioneering example set by nec led to the establishment of a number of engineering colleges in the country in the private sector in the later years. It is one and only engineering college in Nepal with an ISO standard certificate. Also, the visionaries had an adapt knowledge of the easy money that could be churned out of the education industry in this country. Henceforth they came up with an idea of an engineering college in an isolated area. nec meets all the standard of a complete engineering college and its products are well scattered in the market as very competent employees in some reputed organisations, many of the students from nec are pursuing master's and PhD colleges abroad like USA, Australia and Europe as well. The Chairman of nec Mr. Lambodar Neupane was awarded with "Manager of the year" by Oxford summit of leaders, London.
